About
The University of Iowa Emergency Medical Services Student Interest Organization is a recognized student organization through the Office of Student Life at the University of Iowa. UIEMS is sponsored by the Department of Public Safety with Bruce McAvoy (Fire Safety Coordinator) being the group’s liaison. UIEMS works to create a place where students who are interested in emergency medicine can meet, network, and learn about the field. Members are EMTs, paramedics, or neither - so you don't need to be working in emergency services to join! Events in the past have included classes like CPR, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed (hemorrhage control); guest speakers from the hospital or nearby ambulance services (many of which count as CE for EMTs); tours of Iowa City Fire, Johnson County Ambulance Service, and AirCare at the hospital; social events like cookie decorating, dinners, and study socials around finals and midterms; volunteering to provide first aid at Dance Marathon and the Ronald McDonald Run; and shadowing in both the hospital emergency department and Johnson County Ambulance Service.

To provide our members with the best experience possible while also keeping in mind COVID-19 regulations and recommendations, we have many virtual events planned for this semester. So far these events include speaker panels and Q & A’s, educational events with guest speakers from the healthcare field, lots of virtual continuing education opportunities, virtual shadowing, and fun socials like medicine-related movie nights on Zoom. We are still continuing to work hard on ways to meet our member’s needs and ideas and look forward to a great semester!
